There’s no debate about it… Autumn in West Michigan is stunning!!  But with the change of season, comes added hazards on the road.  In a recent look at fall’s most common road hazards by region, the greater Great Lakes area saw ‘Collisions With Animals’ at 51% and Rear End Accidents at 16%, other dangers lurking on our greater Grand Rapids roads during this season.  Not only is it important to identify what they are, but what to do in case you discover yourself face to face with them.

Critters

Deer season is an incredibly popular season in West Michigan, but for drivers it can be an especially dangerous time to navigate the roads safely.   Collisions with animals account for more than half of insurance claims during the autumn months for many of us in the Great Lake state.  While you may not be able to stop animals from crossing in front of your vehicle, there are things you can do to avoid hitting them or reduce your damage if you do.

  • Experts agree you should never, ever swerve to avoid an animal.  Doing so can cause your vehicle to veer into oncoming traffic or leave the roadway.
  • Be vigilant, especially at dusk and dawn for deer on the side of the road.  Look for the telltale sign of eyes shining as they reflect the light from your headlights.
  • Deer are social creatures who travel in herds.  Look for more to follow if you spot one.

Bicyclists

Just as in Spring and Summer months, motorists should take care to avoid bicyclists, who are legally allowed to share the roadways with vehicles.  Many cities and municipalities have begun creating bike lanes to give cyclists more protection and recent legislation has taken it a step further, making it a law that vehicles must give cyclists a 5 foot safe space for passing.

Farm Equipment

Rural areas, such as Caledonia, Middleville and Hastings are no stranger to farm equipment on the road.  Often times, it is slow moving, large and heavy, making their presence an added nuisance.  Slowing down, utilizing care and patience as you pass these is recommended.

People

Beautiful weather and back to school are all reasons for finding more people on the road in fall.  Joggers, walkers and even people whose vehicles are disabled on the side of the road can become a hazard when driving.  Slow down and give plenty of space when passing people in the road.

Emergency Vehicles

Emergency vehicles include police cars, fire trucks and ambulances.  They may be stationary or they may be moving quickly towards you.  Always pull over and stop when encountering an emergency vehicle moving towards you with flashing lights and be sure to slow down and move over when passing one that is stationary on the road.  Not only is it the safer thing to do, but it’s the law in Michigan.

Intersections
You may not even realize it, but driving through an intersection is one of the most dangerous situations you can place yourself and your vehicle in.  Light signals are only effective when people obey them, and all too often people assume that the other vehicle will stop simply because they are supposed to do so.  Never make assumptions that another driver will stop just because they are required to by law.  Driving defensively, with eyes scanning in all directions can help avoid a disaster in an intersection.

School Zones

Fall means back to school and an increase in traffic, bus stops and school zones.  Reduce speeds in school zones to avoid a hefty fine and even more importantly, possibly harming a child or other person in these high pedestrian zones.  Always keep your attention singular to driving safely when driving through a school zone and familiarize yourself with the various bus stops possible (red flashing overheads vs. hazard light stops) in order to obey all traffic laws and increase the safety of everyone around you.

Darkness

Anyone who has driven to work in Michigan during the winter months, knows that it might be the same dark drive both to and from.  As young children we learned that this is the result of the Earth’s tilt making us further from the sun but as drivers, we should recognize how this reduction in visibility also increases are risk on the road.  Keep your headlights clean in order to increase your visibility and make sure they are aimed correctly.  Dim dashboard lights that are making it hard to see, and keep your windshield clean as any streaks will be amplified by the glare of oncoming headlights.

Wet Leaves

One of the most beloved aspects of fall are the beautiful kaleidoscope of color that envelopes our West Michigan world.  But as those pretty leaves fall onto the ground, they can become dangerous on the road.  Experts agree that wet leaves can become as slick as ice so avoid braking on them when possible.

Frost

We never know when old man winter will show his hostile head in Michigan but we should be prepared!  Be aware that roads may be frost covered long before it’s officially winter, reducing speed.

defensive-driving-tips

Aggressive drivers, distracted drivers, impaired drivers, inclement weather and wildlife can all become unwelcome hazards with you out on the road.  While you may not be able to fully control the conditions or drivers around you, one thing you can keep in check is how you handle them.  We often hear the term defensive driving and are told how critical it is on the road but what exactly does defensive driving mean mean?  From the National Safety Council’s Defensive Driving course: defensive driving is defined as… “driving to save lives, time, and money, in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others.”  Keeping that in mind, defensive driving can be broken down into these 10 steps.

Look Ahead

Looking ahead means more than than looking at the car in front of you.  It means looking as far ahead as you can depending on the type of driving you’re doing.  While scanning a 1/2 mile to 1 mile ahead may go against our nature as people, looking that far down the road will keep you steering straighter and better able to manage any hazards lurking in the road ahead.

Stay Focused

Driving is not a passive activity and takes the full attention the person behind the wheel visually, mentally and physically. But a recent study found that 58% of auto accidents are caused by distracted driving.  Defensive driving means distancing yourself from the distractions that fall into these categories:

Visual – taking your eyes off the road to check a text, change the radio, pick up an item or even look at another passenger.

Manual – taking your hands of the wheel to text, use a cell phone, eat, hold a pet or other activities.

Cognitive – taking your mind off the road or getting lost in thought.

Buffer Zone

Did you know that in a recent study, Michigan tied for 3rd Most Dangerous Drivers due to tailgating?  Unfortunately, it’s true.  Tailgating is not only one of the most common forms of aggressive driving, it’s a leading cause of accidents.  Give yourself a defensive advantage by creating space between your car and the ones around you, including in front of you and beside you.  A general rule of thumb is 3 seconds between your vehicle and the one in front of you on dry, clear roads and going 35mph.  Increase the seconds as your speed increases or as road conditions decline.  In addition to creating space, avoid traveling in other motorist’s blind spots.

Scan

Your Driver’s Ed Instructor probably told you to keep your eyes on the road but that shouldn’t be the only place to be looking when you’re behind the wheel.  Having the full picture of what’s happening around your vehicle is vital for determining possible hazards and to plan ahead.  Be aware of your surroundings by scanning your eyes often between your windshield and properly adjusted side and rear view mirrors.

Don’t Assume

Assuming that the car next to you won’t change lanes or that a that a car will yield the right of way simply because they have a stop sign puts you at risk.  Planning for the unexpected means you won’t find yourself reacting in a panic and instead can focus on our next tip…

Escape Route

It might sound dramatic but a good defensive driver not only scans but plans ahead for hypothetical situations.  Along with not assuming other drivers will drive carefully, it’s important to plan how you’ll react should the unexpected happens.  Consider what you’ll do if the car beside you crosses in to your lane.  Do you have room on your other side to move over or space behind you to brake without the car behind you hitting you?  Playing out these scenarios before they happen means you can decide which solution is the best.

Be Alert

Driving drowsy, distracted or impaired is not only unwise, it’s dangerous.  Alertness is a critical factor to responding to situations correctly and in a timely manner.  Anything that makes you less alert, diminishes that ability and increases your risk out on the road.  Try to avoid driving while tired or at times you normally sleep when possible and be sure to take frequent breaks when driving long distances.

Control Your Speed

Driving above the posted speed limit or an unsafe speed for road conditions is unquestionably recognized as a major contributing in both the number and the severity of accidents.  In addition, speeding reduces your reaction time and ease of manueverability while increasing your braking distance.

Stay Calm

It can be difficult to keep your cool when faced with an aggressive driver who cuts you off or is tailgating you, but that’s exactly what you need to do in order to drive defensively.  If possible, allow them to drive ahead of you and distance yourself from their vehicle as much as you can.  Staying calm while tempers flair can not only save you from an unwanted accident but a road rage incident as well.

Make It A Habit

Becoming a safer, more defensive driver doesn’t happen overnight but it can become a habit.  Mentally challenge yourself to check off each tip as you are driving.
