Unfortunately for people in West Michigan, not all used vehicles are created equal.  Here are some definite warning signs you shouldn’t buy a used car…

The Dealer Is Unlicensed

Unlicensed dealerships can come in a couple of different varieties. Some of them appear, from all outward appearances, to look like a  valid dealership with a car lot and salesmen but are actually not licensed by the State of Michigan to sell cars, vans, trucks or SUV’s. While curbstoners are people who may or may not present themselves as the person who owns the vehicle when in reality they do not.  They actually “flip” vehicles by regularly buying cheap cars, doing a minimal amount of work on them (often cosmetically) to make them look better and then resell them quickly.  Both are illegal due to Michigan Vehicle Code that requires the Department of State license and regulates vehicle dealers and to investigate and prosecute dealers who operate without a license. You can verify a dealer is licensed online by visiting here.

There’s A High-Pressure Salesman

High-pressure sales just feel gross and yet people accept them as the norm when they go car shopping.  The simple truth is… if your used car salesman feels smarmy to you, you’re shopping at the wrong dealership. Our salesmen are people just like you and understand how uncomfortable it can be working with an aggressive salesman.  That’s why, unlike traditional car dealerships, we make it a point to create a no pressure, casual car buying experience for all of our customers. We trust in our buyer’s ability to decide for themselves if they’re interested in purchasing a specific vehicle or not.  So while our knowledgeable salesmen are more than happy to answer any questions you might have, they’re also just as happy to let you to shop in peace.

Rattles, Puddles & Smells

It seems obvious but if you walk up to a vehicle and there are puddles underneath it, warning bells should start going off inside your head.  The same rings true with strange sounds or smells. Test drives are a great place to discover many of these issues and leads us to our next buyer beware reason…

They Won’t Allow A Test Drive

Experts estimate that most problems car buyers experience shortly after buying a used vehicle could have been avoided with a more thorough test drive.  But a recent study suggests that up to 20% of car buyers are foregoing a test drive altogether and another third only spend 10 minutes taking it for a spin before deciding it’s the right vehicle for them!  When you consider that a truck, van, SUV or car is one of the priciest purchases you’ll make in your lifetime, spending a little bit of that time to get to know your prospective new car is well worth it. If a dealership won’t allow you to take the car for a test drive, it’s time to beat feet and run, not walk from it.

You Feel Rushed To Decide

If they are putting high-pressure tactics on you to make a decision quickly, this might not be the right minivan, car, truck or SUV for you.  Reputable dealers with reliable vehicles aren’t looking to just capture a quick sale. They should be interested in building a lasting relationship that results in the buyer feeling comfortable, leaving them wanting to return to purchase vehicles in the future.  In addition, if a dealership is trying to strong arm you to buy now and won’t let you take the vehicle to a trusted mechanic to inspect, it’s time to walk away from the vehicle.

They Have A Lot Of Negative Reviews

In today’s world of online reviews, it’s easier than ever to quickly uncover what other people have experienced when interacting with a business. When so much of your time and money rests on needing reliable transportation, why wouldn’t you take advantage of such a quick and easy tool to see what you should expect from a dealership? Every business can face negative comments and reviews from time to time but if you check out a dealer and see the same complaint repeatedly and consistently, it may be smarter to walk away than to deal. Particuarly if reviewers are saying they did not honor prior agreements or change things after the sale was completed.

Fall is such a great time of year in West Michigan… football games, sweater weather, visiting local pumpkin patches and the crisp autumnal air.  For many people, it is undoubtedly their favorite time of year but drivers on the greater Grand Rapids roads, it can be a challenging time to navigate safely to all our needed destinations. Fortunately, with a little heads up and added attention to these common problems with Fall driving, we can hopefully skip any unwanted stress and just enjoy one of the beautiful landscape that Fall has to offer in West Michigan.

Slippery Leaves

On the trees or in people’s yards, leaves are a spectacular display of mother nature’s color creations but on area roadways, they can become an unexpected hazard, particularly when they are wet.  Leaves can retain moisture even if there has not been recent precipitation, compacted by the density of piling and can end up being just as slippery as ice.  Be on the lookout for piles people have raked into the road, ones that have blown into the street or in where you’re likely to encounter fallen leaves in rural areas.

Less Daylight & The Trifecta of Darkness

After the Summer Solstice, days slowly begin to get shorter and the lengths of dark grow longer. In addition, the end of Daylight Savings Time leads to darkness falling very early in the evening, causing many drivers to manage their trek to and from work in the dark or at least in lower light as the months progress. And this doesn’t even take into account that late Fall in Grand Rapids can yield much more cloud cover, stealing the limited direct sunlight we should be getting during the day.  Remember to use your headlights more often during Fall and Winter months, particularly during inclement weather and at dusk or dawn. Also, it’s important to know if your vehicles automatical headlights result in your tail lights being turned on.  Maybe drivers forget that while they can see, it’s just as important to be seen.

Deer On The Move

Deer are a problem on roadways during Fall but more so in Kent and Barry County.  It’s important to be watching for deer, particularly at dusk and dawn which is their most active time of the day.  Be especially alert during these times and on the lookout for telltale signs of glowing eyes reflecting on the side of the road. Experts also recommend slowing down in highly deer dense areas which will help give you a chance to spot them before encountering them. It also helps decrease the amount of damage it causes if you do happen to hit one. If you do spot one, remember that deer travel in groups, meaning it’s unlikely that there will be just one crossing the road.  If you see one, slow down and look for more that may dart across the road to follow.  If you do encounter one, keep your steering wheel steady and do not ever veer for deer. It may be natural instinct to try and avoid an obstacle in the road but doing so may cause you to leave the roadway and hit a tree or cross the center line and strike another vehicle head-on.  While it may seem like a good idea, veering to avoid a deer is the opposite of what you should do.  Instead, brake firmly and calmly while staying in your own lane.

Orange Barrels

You’ve heard the saying… there are two seasons in Michigan, winter and construction.  This holds true when it comes to Fall as it does in Summer. Be aware that some construction projects may have been delayed and taking longer than anticipated. Use caution in construction areas, especially knowing you might encounter some of the other fall hazards there as well.

Fluctuating Temps

Fall temps can vary greatly with drivers having to use their heat in the morning, air conditioning at lunchtime and heat again on the drive home.  If there’s one thing us Michiganders have come to understand is that Fall brings it all… rain, heat, cold, snow and wind. Understand how that heat can affect your tire pressure and check your tires often to make sure they have the recommended air pressure.  Something to also consider is how the temps often change the way that precipitation collects on West Michigan’s roadways. Rain can freeze as ice but appear to simply be wet and snow can melt initially in warmer roads and freeze later after their temperature has dropped. During Fall, it’s more important than ever to not assume roads are safe just because they appear to be.

Buying a vehicle can have a significant effect on both your budget and your overall peace of mind so it’s no wonder why so many people feel overwhelmed by the task.  But taking the time to ask yourself the following useful questions before you even begin your search, can lessen the burden and help lead you down the right path for you, your lifestyle and your wallet.

Should I buy a new or used car?

Buying a brand new vehicle versus a quality pre-owned vehicle can literally cost you thousands of dollars more but that shouldn’t immediately turn you away from buying a new car, nor should the possible issues that could arise from buying a used car leave you running for the hills in fear of purchasing a lemon.  There are clear benefits to buying new and purchasing used, and only by considering all the pro’s and cons of each, can someone decide which is the right choice for them.

Some benefits to buying a new car, truck, SUV or minivan over purchasing a used vehicle are the reduced risk of mechanical issues with the vehicle, receiving a longer warranty coverage and newer options and features in the vehicle. While those are great, it’s also to remember the upsides of buying used and the downside of new.  Some benefits to buying a used car, SUV, minivan or truck are the significant reduction in price, far less immediate depreciation once you own the vehicle, cheaper insurance rates for coverage as well as more prior owners input on the specific make and model vehicle you’re considering buying. Only by considering which benefits you are most interested in receiving, can you begin to choose whether a new or used vehicle is right for your needs.

Am I in shape to purchase a vehicle right now?

There are certainly times where it becomes vital to purchase a vehicle sooner rather than later, like if your current car dies on you unexpectedly or if you have the unfortunate event to be involved in an auto accident.  But barring the absolute need to purchase immediately, buyers should ask themselves if their credit and if they are financially in the best shape to be making that purchase.  Knowing your credit before approaching a dealership can help you understand what financing options you have independent of the dealership so you don’t end up with a higher interest rate than necessary.  In addition, waiting until you can put a decent down payment on a vehicle is always a smarter option over financing the entire purchase.  Take the time, if you have it, to honestly evaluate where you are at with your finances to decide when the best time to buy might be.

How much should I spend?

Budget is the word no one likes to spend time thinking about but one that most of us need to focus on closely when purchasing a vehicle.  The questions… ‘how much can I afford to spend’ and ‘how much am I actually willing to spend’ are critical to understanding where you should begin your search.  While buying a vehicle tends to involve a rather hefty price, the simple fact remains that they depreciate very quickly over time.  In fact, experts estimate that new cars lose up to 19% of its value in its first year of ownership!!  Wow!  While some may prefer to buy a brand new car, it’s easy to understand why so many prefer purchasing a quality, used car, truck, van or SUV instead.

When considering how much you can afford, decide if you are planning on paying cash for it entirely or if you’ll need to finance some or all of the purchase.  If you are planning on paying cash, how much money is available to you?  And if you’re financing, you’ll need to look not only at what you’re approved for but also at the bottom line.  Remember that taxes and other fees, such as registration and license plate, will add to that grand total.  Beware of overstretching yourself in your purchase as owning a vehicle comes with its own cost of maintaining it and keeping it insured.
