4 Spring Break Road Trips 4 Hours Or Less From Grand Rapids
Spring Break is just around the corner in Grand Rapids and with it, the grand exodus of many Michiganders as they head out on the open road in search of warmer days and more sunshine ahead! But for those who won’t be heading to the ever common destinations of Florida or Alabama, are there any fun places for families to travel to that don’t involve an incredibly long drive? We believe there are and we’ve got them listed just for you!
Chicago – Drive Time (2 hours 48 min)
Kick the West Michigan dust off your boots by heading to a destination across our very own Lake Michigan to the Windy City. Better than a normal road trip, heading to Chicago gives you the option of combining both a short drive south and then jumping on either the Amtrak or South Shore Line to enjoy a peaceful trip on a train as well.
While there, take advantage of Chicago’s wonderful dining and shopping experiences along the Magnificent Mile or take in the wondrous sights from the high heights of the Willis Tower. But the attractions don’t stop there! Dive into the aquatic life at Shedd Aquarium, be among the stars at Alder Planetarium, play at Chicago Children’s Museum or get your learning on at the Museum of Science and Industry or the Field Museum.
Detroit – Drive Time (2 hours 18 min)
Why leave Michigan when you can explore not too far from home? The Motor City offers a bevy of fun activities for the family, including catching the Tigers playing at Comerica Park or check out the 250 acres of innovation located at the Henry Ford Museum in nearby Dearborn. Or check out the 1,000 fish and 118 species of sea life at Belle Isle Aquarium and while there, visit the free zoo at Belle Isle Nature Center where you and the family can feed animals and learn about wildlife conservation. But if that zoo isn’t big enough for you, check out the Detroit Zoo. Last but certainly not least, you’ll want to visit the Michigan Science Center (or Mi-Sci for short) to see over 300 hands-on exhibits to give kids real-life experiences with health, space, engineering and physics. But if you don’t mind a short drive to Auburn Hills, you can also check out the fun to be had at Legoland Discovery Center Michigan. With over 32,000 square feet of entertainment, Legoland offers interactive rides, play areas and a 4D cinema.
Sandusky – Drive Time (3 hours 42 min)
The main draw of Sandusky in two words… Kalahari Resort! A veritable playground of water, Kalahari Resorts offers it’s guests 13 incredible waterslides that vary from single sliders to entire groups barreling down a funnel. In addition, they offer climbing walls, a lazy river, pools for the little ones and a FlowRider where you can perfect your boogie boarding skills. But if you’re waterlogged and looking for some fun on dry land, you won’t have to go far here. While there you can take advantage of their 7D Motion Theater, Safari Animal Park, a Big Game Room, Mini-Golf, Mini-Bowling, Laser Tag and Virtual Reality.
But you don’t have to stay at the resort to have a fun time in Sandusky. While there you can take a walk back through time and learn more about the rich history of this city’s past at the Sandusky Maritime Museum or get your spook on at the Ghostly Manor Thrill. Not for the faint of heart, the Ghostly Manor Thrill Center might not be for everyone and not recommended for very young children but if you love to be scared, then you’ll enjoy this creepy, crawly haunted house.
Indianapolis – Drive Time (4 hours 12 min)
A little longer of a drive but worth it in the end is our last recommendation of Indianapolis. For those with a dream for speed, the Dallara IndyCar Factory offers 202,000-square-foot facility as the destination for race-enthusiasts, and those who are brand new to the sport, to get their fill of all things IndyCar! With both exhibits and hands-on activities, this factory lets enthusiasts feel the rush of adrenaline that only racing can do. But for those looking for a tamer version of fine family time, you can visit Conner Prairie which provides a blanket fort in Discovery Station, flex your artistic muscles in Craft Corner, or assemble and patent your own unique invention in Create.Connect. But the fun doesn’t have to end there. It also has an outdoor area where you can sail the skies with a balloon Bon voyage, experience a Civil War journey, climb through the Treetop Outpost or explore the William Connor House. And if a great place for the kids to move and use their creativity, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis provides a safe environment for them to do so within.
