While most people would love to have all the latest whistles and gadgets that come in a new vehicle, that’s not always possible with everyone’s budget. But the great news is… just because you need to purchase a vehicle that is missing some of the extra options you are looking for, doesn’t mean you have to do without!  Here are some terrific upgrades that are both budget-friendly and can help you bring your older vehicle into the 21st century.

Phone Mounts

Phone mounts might not be part of the recent wave of technological advancements in car technology but they are key components in creating a safe and legal way, when combined with other hands-free tools, to utilize your smartphone while you’re behind the wheel. By utilizing a phone mount, your phone can be raised up to your dashboard to mimic an infotainment screen where navigation on your phone can be utilized, as well as music apps. A variety of different options exist for mounting techniques to include being able to mount it to your windshield, vent or directly onto your dash, all at varying price points but largely affordable for even the strictest budget. Shop online at retailers like Amazon and in-store at places such as Office Depot to find one that works best for you.

Bluetooth Connector

By buying a Bluetooth transmitter or car kit, you are creating a veritable hands-free experience for your vehicle no matter the age, make or model. Simple, easy to install and affordable, these systems work by transmitting a signal from your phone to your stereo system without the need of an auxiliary cord, making it possible to listen to your music, stream a podcast, take in an audiobook or even take a phone call all without touching your phone! Better yet, some of these even offer a single or double USB port where you can charge your phone while you’re driving. With many options available, you can easily find one with great ratings for less than $25, making this one of the cheapest and easiest ways to upgrade your vehicle in an instant.

Backup Camera

Backup cameras have been shown to save lives and lawmakers began requiring car manufacturers to make them standard by the year 2018. But if your vehicle was manufactured before then, it might be missing this key safety feature. Fortunately, aftermarket backup cameras are pretty easy to come by these days and are often just as easy to install. With some starting under $50 and ranging to the hundreds, they are actually quite affordable for the peace of mind they can afford.

Remote Starter

Once an expensive add on, remote starters have become quite affordable and even easier to use. In previous modules, the user needed to be within a certain range in order to press the button to start their vehicle, they now can simply start it from an app on their smartphone from the comfort from their home or business. With price points from just over $100 to $300, if getting out in the cold during our harsh West Michigan winters doesn’t sound appealing, you can upgrade pretty easily to add on a remote option.

Parking Sensors

Parking sensors use high-frequency sound waves to detect objects near your vehicle. These sensors emit sound pulses that reflect off of nearby objects which a receiver detects the reflected waves and calculates the distance from your vehicle to the object to warn you when your vehicle is getting too close to an object. For less than $20, you can find parking sensor kits readily available online which are easy to install yourself.

Seat Heater/Cooler Unit

Surprisingly affordable, aftermarket seat heater and cooling units are appealing for many in Grand Rapids who have to battle both the extreme temperatures of our frosty winters and our humid summer days. And with prices beginning around $50 for dual units which are capable of cooling when your vehicle is hot and warming when its cold, their cost can be equally tantalizing. Shop online to find the best deal.

When you’re in the market for a new vehicle, there can be a lot to consider… what make, model and year are you looking to find, will you be buying new or used, and even if you’ll secure financing? If so, should you find it independently or should you finance through a dealership? While we may not be able to make some of those decisions for you, we can help provide helpful information regarding the positives and negatives of financing through a dealership.

Know Before You Go

Before you decide if financing through a dealership is the right choice for you, it’s important to know what your credit score is, what you can do to improve it and double-check there aren’t any errors in the report.  Your credit score includes information about you to lenders on where you live, if you’ve paid your bills late or on time, and whether you’ve been sued or have filed for bankruptcy before. The information found within that score is one of the biggest determining factors on not only being able to secure a loan but what interest rate you’ll end up paying for it once you do. Fully understanding how a great credit score can make the difference between securing your financing at an excellent rate or not even being able to get a loan at all, it only makes sense to do a little detective work into where your credit stands beforehand.  While many credit card companies offer credit reports monthly for free, the Fair Credit Reporting Act requires all 3 of the nationwide credit reporting companies — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — to provide you with a free copy of your credit report, at your request, once every 12 months.  By requesting a free copy of your credit report, you can verify that there are no errors that could end up costing you more or show you what habits you might need to change in order to raise it.  If errors are discovered, the law requires the company who gave the information to the credit bureau to correct it.  You can find more about your rights under the Fair Credit Reporting Act on the Federal Trade Commission’s website here.

All Loans Are Not Created Equal

Many people do not realize it but many dealerships tack on their own higher points to your financing in order to make more money on the sale of the vehicle. While Broadmoor Motors does not add points to interest rates, the average markup of other dealership’s interest being 1.8% per loan, that small amount can make a big difference in your long term cost of the vehicle.  Make sure you understand all aspects of your financing before signing on the dotted line including interest rate, length of the loan and any unnecessary fees that might have been added to the terms. Financing contracts are binding and you’ll find yourself with little recourse after the fact.  Working with trusted, reputable dealerships like Broadmoor Motors who offer transparent financing with many local credit unions and banks can help alleviate any undue risks and concerns.

The More You Know The Better

Now that you know it’s possible to secure financing with a trusted dealer without paying additional points, it’s important to arm yourself with knowledge before you start shopping so you can feel confident you’re getting the best rate possible. Whether you have a favorite local bank or credit union, we recommend shopping around to many in the area or even online to see what you dollar amount you can be approved for and what interest rates are available to you. Contrary to what you might expect, lenders are not required to give you the best rate you qualify for regardless of your credit score.  You’ll want to make sure you only shop around within a 2 week timeframe to ensure you don’t hurt your credit score.  When comparing offers from different lenders, make sure you look at more than just the interest they charge.  Keep an eye out for hidden fees, prepayment penalties and that the loan is for the same amount of time since paying longer on a loan can add more to the overall cost.

Summer is synonymous with road trips for many across West Michigan. But just because you plan to get out of town, doesn’t mean you need to spend more doing so than necessary. Before you go, check out these tips and tricks to save money on your next road trip.

Plan Ahead

While spontaneity can bring excitement to a trip, it can also make things more expensive than they absolutely need to be but making some decisions beforehand, you can help reduce the overall cost of your trip versus making decisions on the fly. Start by deciding some of these things…

  • Will it be a house, a condo or a boat? If so, utilizing websites like Homeaway, VRBO or Airbnb to find lodging at a privately owned home or rental can help you find a good deal at the destination of your choosing.
  • Will your drive be long enough to make it necessary to have an overnight stop to sleep where you’ll need to stay at an additional hotel? If so, try comparing hotel and motel rates with websites like Kayak, Orbitz or Hotels.com to find a cheaper rate typically over what you can get booking directly through the hotel’s or motel’s website.
  • What attractions will you be taking part in while you’re there? More than likely your trip will involve some type of sightseeing and knowing what you plan to do ahead of time can save you some green. Many cities offer bundle deals to some of their most popular attractions and buying one can typically save you a bulk amount if you plan on hitting up all or some of the locations listed. Try searching for deals before you leave or seeing if buying tickets online and printing them out before you leave home can save you as well. Remember, every $5 or $10 you don’t have to spend adds up! In addition, you can search sites like Groupon, LivingSocial or CoolSavings can help you find hidden savings or events you never thought to try while you were in town!

Get Road Ready

Road trips are only fun if you can get there. Avoid the stress of breaking down on some unknown highway or byway by getting your vehicle in shape for the trip ahead before you head out. Check your tires to make sure they offer the recommended tread to keep you safe on the road to ensure they have the recommended air pressure. Not only will it keep you safer on the road, but it will also help improve your fuel efficiency and savings at the pump. In addition, getting an oil change and a tuneup before you leave will lessen the odds of having issues on your vacation. If you decide your vehicle just isn’t roadworthy enough to make a long-distance trip, look into renting a vehicle. While it may seem like an added expense, the truth is it could be the difference between having an expensive tow and repair bill in a strange town or getting there worry-free.

Pack Smart

Making frequent stops for snacks and meals while on the road can not only make a long trip feel even longer, they can also tally up fast as unneeded hits to your pocketbook. Packing sandwiches, drinks and healthy snacks into a cooler for your trip can help alleviate both problems and you’ll find it will more than likely be a healthier choice to keep you feeling better as well.

Save At The Pump

While many people may download apps like Gas Buddy to save at the pump (which also isn’t a bad idea), you can save on fuel before you even get there by adjusting your driving. Habits like accelerating quickly, braking often and driving too fast reduce your fuel efficiency as well as making your drive more stressful. Driving defensively can not only help you improve your mpg but it can help you avoid an unwanted accident.

Summer is synonymous with road trips, travel and family vacations. But as people get ready to take to the open road, it’s important to take the time to make sure your vehicle is ready for the added miles. As the only point of the vehicle that makes direct contact with the road below you, June has been deemed National Tire Safety month by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in an attempt to remind people to check their tires to ensure they are safe. Ideally, tires should be checked regularly to make sure they are performing at their best and are not in need of being replaced. Doing so will not only improve your safety but extend the life of the tire and save you money in the long run.

Proper Tire Inflation

Having the recommended amount of tire pressure in your tires is quite possibly the most important aspect of keeping your tires safe and roadworthy but according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), only 19% of consumers actually check and maintain their tire pressure at a proper level. Improve the safety of your vehicle and avoid being the one in four vehicles on the road to have at least one tire significantly underinflated by checking to make sure they are at the right PSI monthly with a quality gauge you can trust, whether that’s a digital, stick or dial type . Not only will this make your vehicle safer on the road but save you on average $0.11 per gallon while you’re driving.

Proper Tire Tread

Tires come in a variety of types to enhance specific performance including All Weather, All Terrain, Competition, Passenger, Performance and Winter and while deciding which tire is best for you depends on the climate you live in or your specific needs, the simple fact remains that every tire needs proper tread to work in the way it is intended. Tires depend on their tread to maintain traction on any road surface but they really depend on it when your vehicle encounters inclement weather like snow, ice and rain. Tread, while often thought of as one item, is comprised of several components including the shape of the tire itself, the thread grooves, voids, lugs, sipes and wear bar, and are all key elements to your tire’s performance. An easy way to make sure your overall tread is correct, place a penny upside down in several of the grooves. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head above the groove, then your tires should be replaced as soon as possible.

Proper Tire Maintenance

Maintaining your tires goes well beyond checking your tire pressure monthly or the tread you have left. It also involves taking steps to ensure the longevity of your tire as the miles go by. Rotating your tires helps not only improve the performance of the tire but also the life of the tire. This involves the practice of moving the wheels and tires of an automobile from one position to another, to ensure even tire wear. Experts recommend rotating your tires every 6 months or every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, and doing so in a pattern of making sure each tire not only shifts from back to front but to driver’s side to passenger side or vice versa since tires perform differently on where they are placed on the vehicle.

In addition, it’s important to check to make sure your car is aligned correctly. It’s not always easy to detect while driving but if you notice your vehicle is drifting to one side or your steering wheel needs to be held crooked in order to go straight, it could be due to an alignment problem. It’s possible you may also notice uneven wear to your tires that can indicate you have an alignment problem.  Wheel alignment isn’t usually listed by vehicle manufacturers on the recommended maintenance schedule, so how often it should be done is left more to when you notice a problem.

Getting a driver’s license is right of passage that many kids can’t wait to achieve but for many parents, sending their kids off to navigate the open road alone can be a terrifying experience. When you consider the scary statistics behind teen drivers, it’s no wonder many find it hard to let them go on their own. Teen drivers have the highest crash rate of any age group which is nine times as high as drivers who are 20 years of age and up, and six times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than adults.

While Michigan has adapted its driver’s license program to include graduated licensing to give teens time to gain experience before they gain full driving privileges without restrictions, many parents still wonder if there is more they can do to prepare their new drivers for the unexpected and the surprising answer is yes! Recognizing the need to show teen drivers how to deal with the unexpected, a few different teenage defensive driving programs have been developed to show teens how to handle the vehicle they’re driving in a safe environment before the need arises. In fact, recent studies have shown that teens who complete similar programs are 64% LESS likely to be involved in an accident their first year of driving when compared to their teen counterparts who had not taken a defensive driving course. Additionally, those that complete these courses could also be eligible for discounts from their insurance companies, giving parents not just peace of mind and money in their pockets.

Michigan State Police Teenage Defensive Driving Course

Michigan State Police are arguably some of the best drivers in the world and as such, train recruits from the academy and law enforcement officers from around the world.  As their website states, this class gives teens a chance to “Train like a Trooper”, with the same instructors and over the same closed course that recruits and FBI agents actually train on! Over the course of four hours, teens learn with hands-on training on how to effectively navigate defensive driving in areas with practical exercises in serpentine, controlled braking, evasive maneuvering and skid control. Class sizes are capped at 16 pupils so driver to instructor ratio is a max of 2:1 and offered to drivers between the ages of 16-19. While previously, there was a four year waiting list, recent changes to class curriculum and length have allowed State Troopers to double the number of students they can train, reducing the waiting list now to one year. You can find more information and get your teen added to the 2020 waiting list by visiting here. Class cost is $75 and participants are required to hold a Graduated Level 2 license.

Ford Driving Skills For Life

Celebrating their “Sweet 16” this year, the Ford Driving Skills For Life works to take driving skills to a higher level beyond driver’s training and teach young drivers practical skills they’ll be able to utilize throughout their lifetime to keep themselves and others safer on the road.

As Ford Driving Skills for Life continues to move forward and adapt to changing driver behaviors and new road safety concerns, the program will again introduce innovative tools and add specialized programming to enhance the learning experience for new drivers.  Highlights of this year’s Ford Driving Skills for Life program include innovative new sleep suit technology to demonstrate the dangers of drowsy driving, new training module to explain how to use ever-improving vehicle safety technology, expanded program for the unique circumstances of driving in rural and emerging markets, addition of a parent module to assist in teen training away from Driving Skills for Life events and U.S. communities that are new participants in the program’s hands-on training.

B.R.A.K.E.S.

B.R.A.K.E.S. (Be Responsible And Keep Everyone Safe) is a non-profit 501(c)3 whose mission is to prevent injuries and save lives by training and educating teenage drivers and their parents about the importance of safe and responsible driving. A FREE program for drivers between the ages of 15-19 with a valid driver’s permit or driver’s license in 18 different states, it was started by NHRA drag racing star Doug Herbert after losing his two young sons, Jon and James, in a tragic car crash in January of 2008. Resolving to put together a program to save other families from the heartbreak of losing a child behind the wheel, he put together a program to teach young drivers the necessary advanced skills to build confidence and keep them safe including collision avoidance, off-road recovery, skid recovery, distraction exercises and panic stop.

It’s been in the news frequently over the last year but there has finally been a resolution to change car insurance for Michigan drivers. In case you somehow managed to miss it, Michigan Legislature recently voted to make significant changes to not only how our state’s auto insurance will work but the way policy premiums can be decided. What do all of these changes mean to the average Grand Rapids driver? Well, that’s still up for debate on how it will all shake out in the end but we’ll start with the changes to Michigan’s No-Fault auto insurance and leave it up to you to form an opinion.

New Options For PIP (Personal Injury Protection)

Michigan is the only state in the USA that mandates all drivers carry an unlimited amount of personal injury protection or PIP on their policy. But having this mandate also means Michigan drivers pay the highest premium in the entire country. In an attempt to curb the cost of insurance premiums, lawmakers have now required insurance providers to offer a variety of options ranging from a continued unlimited medical benefit policy, a $500,000 policy, a $250,000 policy, a $50,000 for Medicaid enrollees and the ability to opt out entirely if someone has other qualified health coverage. In doing so, the Michigan Catastrophic Claim Association Fee would be reduced by 80% for all options other than unlimited coverage.

Empowers Insurance Fraud Division

Auto Insurance Fraud entails someone deceiving an insurance company regarding a claim on their vehicle. This type of fraud can include submitting misleading information or false documentation to support their claim. Every year, insured drivers end up absorbing the cost of this fraud which can add an astonishing $200-$300 more to your insurance premium annually. Changes to Michigan’s No-Fault insurance aim to strengthen the insurance fraud division within the state Department of Insurance and Financial Services to empower law enforcement to crack down on auto insurance fraud.

Eliminates Non-Driving Rating Factors

Did you know that if you are a young male, you’ll pay more for insurance than a female? Or if you that having bad credit can mean your insurance premium will also be higher than someone that has excellent credit? In the past, insurance companies were legally able to base what rate you would pay for insuring the same make, model and year of a vehicle as someone else based on factors such as gender, marital status or the zip code you lived within. The accepted changes look to level the playing field by removing factors that are not driving related.

Implements Fee Schedule

The hope of this change is to end excessive and overinflated health care costs related to auto insurance claims by implementing a fee schedule to cap the amount providers can charge insurers which to date, have often been much higher than the same services charged for patients who have Medicaid or workers compensation. By creating a No-Fault fee schedule based on the Medicare fee schedule, this would govern what charges doctors, hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation facilities and any provider who cares for and treats car accident victims could charge for doing so. Depending on the type of facility involved, whether a substantial portion of its patients are incapable of paying out of pocket, whether it is a freestanding rehabilitation facility or various levels of trauma centers, reimbursement could range from 190% to 250% of the amount payable under Medicare.

While there may be tweaks and small changes moving forward, these changes have been approved and signed to go into effect on July 1, 2020, and remain for eight years. The variable fee schedule to cap medical costs would go into effect July 1, 2021, and start at 200% to 240% of Medicare rates and then be reduced to 195% to 235% of Medicare in 2022, and then followed by another reduction to 190% to 230% of Medicare rates in 2023. It’s still undecided if these new changes to the law will positively impact insurance rates with a reduction but in the end, that is the hope and objective. We’ll have to see how it all plays out.

They say there are two seasons in West Michigan… Winter and construction. And we’d say based on the all of the Road Closed signs you find driving in and around Grand Rapids, that’s a pretty accurate depiction. From the time the snow melts in Michigan until the time it snows again, crews set to work fixing and repairing our roads. While extremely helpful in the long run, it can be frustrating for your everyday commute or creating unexpected delays on your chance to get away out of town. Here are our tips to avoid the construction madness this summer!

Know Before You Go

Online Heads Up

It might sound oversimplified but the best way to avoid road construction is to know where it exists beforehand. Whether you are driving locally or taking a nice, long summer road trip, there are websites available to give you a heads up on upcoming road closures and delays from a local perspective as well as across the state. Checking local websites like Kent County Road Commission or Ottawa Country Road Commission can help you see today’s posted work schedule and even future road projects to avoid unpleasant surprises on your daily commute. Additionally, each state, including this one in Michigan, should offer their own version of the same, showcasing highway closures and other large projects so you can know before you get there.

Smartphone Apps

There are also smartphone apps available to give you a heads up on real-time traffic reports and road closures. Some of the top free apps include Google Maps, Waze, Apple Maps, Intrix, Mapquest and TomTom GPS. These apps can offer up to date road reports, including accidents, delays and speed traps, by utilizing the hundreds of millions of users worldwide who have the app on their smartphone as well as having their locations turned on, which in turn sends anonymous bits of data to the app. Utilizing all of this data, with some apps allowing for even further input from users to manually give updates to the information, the apps are able to calculate the average speed and amount of traffic on area roads at any given time. These updates can offer you suggestions on what is the best route to take with an estimated time of arrival and other suggestions that can include avoiding toll roads and highways if that is preferred by the driver but also can notify you if road conditions change suddenly on your route due to a car accident, a break down or if there is a car pulled over on the side of the road causing a gawker slowdown. Which means that using these apps can save you the hassle of unexpected delays while traveling unfamiliar roads or even familiar routes that may be hampered by a sudden stoppage or closure. Instead, they can offer you alternative routes or simply letting you know that despite a delay, your path remains the quickest one. Although all of the aforementioned apps are free, they might not all be equal with the same functions and depending on your preferences, you may choose to use one over the others if ads or reliability are an issue for some.

Take An Alternative Route

There’s something to be said about taking the road less traveled, and the threat of construction congestion may behoove you to do just that in order to avoid unneeded stress and frustration. Despite having the upper hand of technology on our side when traveling the greater Grand Rapids roads this summer, there may come a point in time where you may simply choose to forego traveling within construction zones, even if they remain the quickest route. in doing so, as an added bonus, you may even find that taking the back way to a destination may not only offer a more peaceful and quiet commute but might help you find a yet to be discovered favorite unknown shop, bakery, restaurant or a fun, new town you and your family might want to stop to visit in the future.

When people consider buying a vehicle, they often grapple over whether to buy a new or used one to fit their needs. Often times, they try to weigh the benefits of paying more for a brand new car, van, SUV or truck over a used one, with one of those highlighted benefits being the safety net of a warranty accompanying that purchase. But If you’re one of the 71% of Americans polled who are considering buying a used car over new, you might be asking yourself if you truly have to sacrifice a warranty in order to save money?

Many people are completely surprised to find out that it’s possible to save thousands by buying a quality used vehicle from Broadmoor Motors that also comes backed by a FREE 30 Day/3000 Mile powertrain warranty. In addition to our standard 30 Day Warranty that’s offered on nearly all of our vehicles at our Caledonia, Hastings and Wayland locations, we offer our customers the ability to purchase an Extended Protection Plan, which offer varying levels of coverage to meet both their needs and their budget.

Before we talk about what makes Broadmoor Motor’s warranty different than other dealerships, it’s important to understand what are extended service plans. Extended Service plans are essentially insurance plans that safeguard against possible unexpected and expensive repairs that might arise in the future. They cover certain repairs which are agreed upon in the plan for a specific period of time or mileage once the vehicle and extended plan are purchased, and they can offer the buyer peace of mind that they won’t be out thousands of dollars in the future should problems arise.

Unlike many Extended Service plans which are handled by outside parties, our Broadmoor Motors options are all locally administered so you won’t ever have to deal with needing to call a strange 1-800 number only to be told you’ll have to take your vehicle to some remote dealership you have no relationship with. Our customers need only to contact us and then repairs are handled by us. Our service products have been built with the primary focus of our customer’s needs in mind and are not an attempt to just try to sell them something that is completely unnecessary. Unlike an outside party, we feel like we are familiar with the history of our vehicles and our customer, making us far more capable of providing the right coverage to fit them individually.

A common misperception is that a hassle-free claim is not possible with an extended warranty but at Broadmoor Motors, it’s our goal to provide it for our customers! We offer our customers a complimentary car rental during the entire repair of the vehicle so they can still live their lives with a minimal amount of inconvenience while the claim is being handled. We also provide complimentary towing to our dealership so we can get to work resolving any problem. In addition, our warranties are transferable which means you have an added plus for anyone buying the vehicle from you privately in the future. PLUS, our warranties are backed by a locally owned and operated company who has built a trusted reputation while being in the automotive business for over 60 years in the Grand Rapids area!!

In an effort to help curb distracted driving and bring awareness to the very real and growing problem Michigan drivers face today on the road, April has been deemed Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

What is Distracted Driving?

Distracted Driving is any activity that takes away the attention of the person behind the wheel of a vehicle from doing their primary task of driving. It can include visual distractions, physical distractions, cognitive distractions and auditory distractions.

Visual Distraction – taking your eyes off the road to look at something either inside or outside of the vehicle. This can include reading a text, looking at someone inside the vehicle or watching something outside the vehicle such as an accident. These distractions keep you from seeing dangers on the road you may encounter.

Physical Distraction – means moving one or both of your hands off the steering wheel to do something else in the vehicle. It can include changing the channel on the radio, reaching for your phone, petting their dog, eating, drinking or handing something to a passenger. These distractions keep you from being able to react quickly to situations.

Cognitive Distraction – not thinking about the act of driving while behind the wheel.  Also known as mental distractions, they happen anytime your mind is not focused on driving and could involve thinking about a problem, daydreaming and having a conversation with someone else in the vehicle or on the phone. These distractions keep you from being able to recognize dangers ahead.

Auditory Distraction – noises or sounds that distract you from the task of driving. These can include instances where the driver gets distracted by hearing something such as a notification on their cell phone, kids fighting, a baby crying, loud music or a ringing phone. These distractions can cause you to miss things such as hearing emergency vehicle sirens notifying you they are coming through an intersection, a honking horn that could help you avoid an accident or a hear that a train is coming down the track.

How can we prevent them?

Distracted driving is the cause of 58% of accidents involving teens, over 4,600 fatalities and costs society $40 billion in a single year alone! When you consider all that distracted driving costs us, it’s no wonder it’s become the focal point of safety experts, who offer these tips to keep you and those you love from becoming distracted while they are behind the wheel.

Drivers

As the driver of the vehicle, you are responsible for not only the people riding in your vehicle but also for maintaining control of your vehicle in a safe and legal manner. Most states have some type of restrictions on cell phone use while driving but even if your state does not, make the wise decision to put your phone away, either in a compartment or bag that can’t be easily reached to avoid the temptation of checking it when you receive a notification or phone call. While it may not seem like a big deal, it’s important to resist the urge to save time and eat while you’re driving to avoid spilling items which obviously would become a large distraction. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the dash controls in your vehicle and set up your GPS before departing to avoid having to take your hands off the steering wheel any more than need be.

Passengers

One of the best ways to help the driver of a vehicle stay focused on driving is to not be distracting yourself or help take care of distractions they encounter when possible. If they are tempted to read a text or a phone call, offer to read it or answer it for them or if there are small children who need something, be the one who helps them so the driver can do the most important job they have at the moment which is to drive. For parents of teens, help them avoid becoming distracted by too many passengers by limiting who and how many people can ride with them.

You work hard for your money so why would you want to spend more on your vehicle than you absolutely need to buy it pr maintain it? In an effort to help our customers save more, we’re talking today about easy ways to avoid wasting money on your vehicle!

Buying A Used Vehicle Without A Warranty

There was a time when you simply couldn’t find a used vehicle from a dealership that also came with a warranty on it but those days have changed. Some dealerships, like Broadmoor Motors, have begun to offer their customers not only a variety of quality vehicles but ones that come backed by a warranty and then the option to purchase extended warranties. Which begs the question… if you could purchase a vehicle that you know comes with the certainty that you won’t be facing unexpected expenses of repairs, why wouldn’t you? Buying a used vehicle with a warranty is one of the easiest ways to save money on future repairs and give you peace of mind.

Premium Gas

Higher octane helps prevent knocking in engines but if it’s not recommended for your vehicle, you are just throwing money away by using it.  While some people view octane levels as good, better and best, that simply isn’t the case.  Most engines are designed to take regular gas and using premium does not actually enhance the vehicle’s performance.  Unless you have a more powerful engine and the manufacturer recommends a higher octane, save yourself some pain at the pump… fill it with regular.

Ignoring Check Engine Light

Your Check Engine indicator is meant to alert you to problems early on so they can be corrected as soon as possible but ignoring one won’t make it go away and could end up costing you more in repair bills by delaying a fix and doing more damage to your engine or vehicle. While no one enjoys bringing their vehicle to the shop, it doesn’t always have to be painful. A trusted mechanic should offer you a solution and a timeline when the repair should be completed to avoid more costly issues and knowing you can rely on them to fix the problem can ultimately save you both time and money.

Delaying Brake Fix

Brakes are one the items that can become more expensive to repair the longer you put it off so our biggest suggestion is… don’t. Fixing your brakes at the first sign of trouble can help prevent a costly repair bill by avoiding having to replace rotors and drums that were worn down unnecessarily once the pads became too thin.

Oil Changes Too Soon

Regular oil changes are critical in maintaining proper lubrication in your vehicle’s engine but having oil changes done more often than necessary can be an added expense with no real benefit.  While most dealerships strongly encourage people to have their oil changed every 3,000 miles, experts have agreed it simply isn’t needed that frequently.  Broadmoor Motors recommends to customers having it changed every 4,000 miles to maintain a clean and healthy engine.

Under-Inflated Tires

Did you know that a tire under inflated by even 6 psi can cost you 5% of your fuel efficiency, reduce the lifespan of that tire by 25% and even lead to failure?  It’s true.  Low tire pressure is not only dangerous but it can take a big hit on your wallet as well with additional money spent on gas and replacement.  A tire that’s correctly inflated will last longer, keep your safer and use less gas. To save money on fuel and unwanted additional wear to your treads, keep your tires inflated to the psi recommended by the manufacturer.

Buying From The Wrong Place

There’s no doubt, buying a vehicle from a sketchy private seller or a shady dealership can end up costing you more than necessary in the end but you don’t have to walk into situations blind. Online reviews are a wonderful tool to help consumers make a more informed decision regarding a dealership and their practices. While no business is immune to a negative review from time to time, if one has predominantly negative reviews, you may want to steer clear. Particularly if the same problem or issue is experienced by multiple people or the dealership has not attempted to make things right.
