New Tech Options For Vehicles In 2020
Technology has changed tremendously over the years in modern vehicles and while we may not have the flying cars we were once promised, and probably came to expect by the year 2020, there have been significant advances in not only safety features in today’s cars, vans, SUV’s and trucks but options of comfort designed to simply increase the rider’s experience. Below are just a few of the exciting new tech options for vehicles in 2020!
According to the United States Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration, Americans now drive more annually than they ever have in history. Clocking in at 13,476 miles a year, that breaks down to 293 hours spent behind the wheel on average for US drivers! When you consider the time people will endure in traffic, it’s no wonder they are looking for better ways to enjoy their ride. Once just an option found only in luxury vehicles, massaging seats are becoming more common in everyday cars, SUVs and even pickup trucks!
Heads Up Display
Heads up display is a digital image that gets projected transparently onto the windshield of a car that shares the same information that is shown on your dashboard. This information can include your speed, RPMs, time and temperature but this technology could begin to also show items such as your GPS directions, texts, emails and infotainment details. Now you might be asking yourself if this info is available on your dash, why would you want it additionally on your windshield? The simple answer is… to save drivers critical seconds where they are looking away from the road. While this technology is available in many luxury vehicles, that doesn’t need to be your only option for obtaining it. Today, there are apps available to give you the same experience but without having to shell out the money for a brand new vehicle.
Lane Keeping Assist
Lane Keeping Assist alerts drivers when their vehicle is crossing lane markings by audible, visual or haptic warnings but the assistance doesn’t stop there. In addition to the alerts the vehicle sends to the driver to warn them they are leaving their lane without using their turn signal, it can also gently help steer them back into the center of the lane. Although not quite the autonomous driving we’ve been told will one day exist, this option can give drivers a small backup with steering for a few seconds which could make the ultimate difference between an unpleasant collision and arriving safely at your final destination.
Automatic Emergency Braking
Once just a luxurious add on option for car buyers, this feature has tremendous safety advantages and is slated to be in all vehicles produced in 2022! In conjunction with Front Collision Warning Systems, Automatic Emergency Braking systems alert drivers to the dangers of an imminent crash and will help apply the maximum braking capacity of the car in order to avoid it. Sometimes this system can be referred to simply as Front Collision Warning Systems while encompassing the additional braking option, this automation can vary between manufacturers as to what it detects, including other vehicles that are slowing, those that are stopped and with some, even pedestrians. In spite of the fact that this safety feature may be able to prevent all accidents from occurring, they may in fact be utilized to help reduce the significance of collisions that do occur.
Exit Warning Assist
Differing from Lane Keeping Assist, Exit Warning Assist is meant to help drivers avoid pedestrians, cyclists and cars outside of the vehicle and engages once the engine has been turned off. This feature works best in congested urban driving conditions to alert passengers that there is an approaching hazard before they swing open their door and potentially create a dangerous collision. In situations that the system deems as dangerous, it can utilize flashing LED lights, sounds alarms and even lock the doors to prevent them from opening. This feature typically is active for approximately 3 minutes after the car has been parked and the engine turned off.
