The New Year often brings the best of intentions to stay committed to an old list of resolutions we’d like to accomplish in the coming year. Most commonly, people vow to lose weight, get organized, save more money and spend less money. But what if we told you that you could make 10 resolutions for your vehicle this year that could lengthen the life of your current vehicle, save you money and alleviate the added stress and unwanted frustrations of unnecessary breakdowns? The great news is… you can!!
Getting in shape might be a goal you have in mind for your personal body, but the simple fact is that by making a commitment this year to get and keep your vehicle’s body in shape, you could save yourself thousands of dollars on unneeded repairs. Take a look at our 10 Resolutions For Your Vehicle to see just how easy saving money, getting organized and extending your car’s life throughout 2017 can be.
Tires are the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road beneath you so it only makes sense to make sure they’re functioning at their very best before you begin logging miles in the upcoming year. One of the easiest things you can do is check your tire’s air pressure to make sure they are inflated to the manufacturer’s specifications. Doing so can improve gas mileage and prevent tire failure while you’re driving. In addition to tire pressure, you’ll want to inspect the overall condition of all four tires for uneven wear and tread depth. Worn tires can negatively impact your braking distance and will certainly affect your tires ability to maintain traction on the roadway. As you start the New Year, make sure your tread depth is not below 4/32. An easy way to make sure you have the recommended amount of tread is with the quarter test. Flip a quarter upside down with Washington’s head facing you. If his head is partially covered by the tire, your tires still have adequate tread. If not, it’s time to replace them.
Fluids are the lifeblood of your engine and if you’re missing any, your vehicle is straining to perform. Start by having your oil changed before your trip to ensure the oil is clean and full, as well as a new air filter to gain your best gas mileage. Next, check yourself or have your trusted mechanic check your Coolant, Brake, Transmission and Steering fluids to make sure none of them are low. If they are low, it’s important to replace them but it could also be telling of a bigger problem you should resolve. Also, while your hood is up, double check that your Washer Fluid reservoir is full to keep your windshield clear of any snow, slush, dirt, grime or debris.
Routine maintenance can prevent big problems and keep your vehicle running smoothly for years to come. In addition to regular oil changes, you should be inspecting all filters, belts and hoses. And don’t forget about replacing those wiper blades!! Every vehicle manufacturer has their own recommended service schedules and you should check with your owner’s manual to see when you should perform them.
Clean Out The Clutter
The new year is a great time to let go of bygones and start the year fresh and clean!! This year, resolve to make 2017 the cleanest year for your ride and spiff it up. You can pay to have your vehicle professionally detailed by a shop but if saving money is the primary goal, you can do a decent enough job yourself. Start with the basics… decluttering any items you have lying around in your vehicle unnecessarily and throwing away any trash you find. Then focus your attention on giving a good wipe down to the dashboard, console, door jams, windows, mirrors and vacuuming out the interior. If you find your floor mats and upholstery are stained or dingy, try giving them a light scrub with soapy water and then removing the moisture using a wet/dry vac to prevent molding or a musty smell from developing. Last but not least, give the exterior a good wash and your vehicle should be sparkling! Not only will this make it look better but it will also show a dealership your car is well taken care of, which will be important to any prospective future buyers.
Defensive drivers receive fewer tickets, are involved in less accidents and are statistically safer than their driving counterparts. Commit this year to safer driving practices like not texting while driving and avoiding distractions from the road. Avoid speeding, tailgating or other unsafe practices this year and vow to make this year a proactive approach to staying safe! By focusing on the task at hand (driving) and obeying all traffic laws, you will save lives, time and money despite the conditions and actions of others on the road.
