Steps To Buying A Used Car

Whether you are considering buying a new or used car, van, SUV or truck, it can often feel overwhelming when you begin your search, including trying to decide how to cover your bases in order to get the best deal while securing the right vehicle for your needs. But with a little bit of planning ahead, you can take the stress out of buying a vehicle with this simple roadmap to buying a new or used car.


Understand Your Needs

Before you set out to find the vehicle that will work best for you, it’s important to get a firm understanding of what that specifically entails. Consider the following questions when narrowing down the vehicle field:


  • Should I buy new or used?
  • What is the primary purpose of this vehicle?
  • Will it be a family vehicle that will need to transport a lot of people, used as a commuter requiring great gas mileage, or will it predominantly be used as a work vehicle?
  • Who will be riding in it?
  • What is the terrain like where it will be driven most (rough terrain requiring 4WD/AWD or city driving)?
  • What’s the most important factor… fuel efficiency, ability to haul loads, multiple people, having 4 Wheel Drive or All Wheel Drive?
  • Is there enough storage room, cup holders, cubby space?
  • What is the towing capacity (if it’s a truck or SUV)?
  • What safety features are a necessity?
  • What extra options would you like to have in your next vehicle?

A budget is a subject no one likes to spend much time thinking about but one that most of us need to focus on closely when purchasing a vehicle.  The questions… ‘how much can I afford to spend’ and ‘how much am I actually willing to spend’ are critical to understanding where you should begin your search.  While buying a vehicle tends to involve a rather hefty price, the simple fact remains that they depreciate very quickly over time. If depreciation is something you are largely concerned about then it might be wise to consider a used vehicle over a new one.


Research Dealerships

There are a reason why people have come to dread going to a car dealership and working with a car salesman… aggressive salesmen, dishonest practices and bait & switch practices have given the industry a negative reputation. But not all dealerships or salespeople are that way and it is possible to find ethical and honest ones in the greater Grand Rapids area. Before you go, check out reviews online from previous customers to see if there are common issues or problems with their business or if people have been predominantly happy with their car buying experience.

People have heard before that it’s better to secure their own financing before heading into a dealership but they typically do not know why. Many people are shocked to discover that some dealerships often mark up the interest rates they generate inhouse over what the bank is charging.
