Take The Fright Out Of Car Buying

With Halloween just around the corner, you might be considering which horror film you could watch to offer the biggest scare factor but if you’re in the market to buy a new or used car, van, truck or SUV, the most terrifying thing you could come across are the tricks waiting for you at a car dealership. But equipped with the right knowledge, you can take the fright out of car buying!

 

The Trick: In-house Financing

One of the quickest ways to pay more for your vehicle than you need to is walking blindly into a dealership without doing any of your homework ahead of time on where your credit stands and what interest rate you qualify to get on a loan. Many people are completely unaware but dealerships often mark up the interest rate on your loan when financing is completed in-house and that it is actually legal for them to do so. Not only does this cost you more in interest over the lifetime of the loan, but it may also make your term longer than it needs to be. By shopping around beforehand, you can get a better feel for what the lowest rate is available but help you decide what length you are interested in as well as how comfortable you are with the monthly payment.

 

The Trick: The Switcheroo

Often referred to as Bait and Switch, this practice involves the dealership advertising a vehicle with an attractively low price but then saying that vehicle was sold but another, more expensive option is available instead. It can also take the shape of offering enticing offers on financing, lease or sales options but require special add-ons that up the price in order to receive them or even have fine print that ultimately negates the offers. All of these practices are illegal but some dealerships continue to practice them because in the end, they are getting away with them. You can protect yourself from these deceitful practices by being armed with information before you step foot on the lot. If you see an ad online, print out the specific ad you are referring to including the VIN and stock number so you know you are talking about a specific vehicle. Additionally, asking for the total price upfront with a breakdown of taxes, fees and any additional add ons can help you spot if there’s anything in there you were unaware of and if they are trying to slip anything past you.

 

The Trick: Offering No Warranty

People assume that a used car won’t come with a warranty because so many used car dealerships choose not to offer one on their vehicles. This can add up to expensive and unexpected repair bills later down the road.  While most used car dealerships offer no warranty, those that do typically only offer ones that cover 50% on parts and 50% on labor. The Trick: Offering Unnecessary Warranty Coverage or Unclear Coverage

Upselling is the name of the game for many used car dealerships and warranty coverage is no different. While some may not clearly spell out what it covers exactly, others may pad in extras that you simply do not need for your vehicle. Customers should also ask if there are any reoccurring fees they will incur over the course of the warranty or if there are any service fees and deductibles they will be responsible for covering if repairs are needed, as well as if there is a maximum payment that the warranty will cover on the vehicle.
