Before you can begin your search, it’s important to consider exactly what you are looking for in a used truck. What is the terrain like where it will be driven most, will it have rough or slippery terrain requiring 4WD or AWD or just city driving where FWD will be sufficient?  Will it be a commercial vehicle or work truck?  Are there options that are non-negotiable if it is going to be used for work or are you looking for it to have more high-end options that give it a more luxurious feeling?  Will it primarily be a family vehicle with room needed for car seats and booster seats, or will you need it to have the ability to tow heavy trailers and loads? Many truck shoppers may not realize that there are big differences in a work truck versus a passenger truck intended more for comfort and looks, including the overall appearance of and mileage.  Fortunately, making these decisions before you set off can help eliminate options that just aren’t right for you and save you both time and money in the long run.


Check Off The Boxes

Once you have decided what your needs are, you can begin the task of filtering out the makes and models that don’t quite fit the bill. For example, if you plan on utilizing your truck for more family needs than using it as a work truck, you can eliminate 3/4 ton or half-ton pickup trucks that might be a lot more towing power than you realistically need.  Instead, you can focus on finding a truck that comes equipped with the extra options you are looking to find such as leather seating, Bluetooth capability or seating for 5.  Research local options and contact individuals or dealerships with pickup trucks you are interested in so can begin to formulate a game plan on which ones you would like to see in person.


Devil Is In The Details

Now that you know what you need and where to find it, it’s important to know what to ask while you are at the dealership or private seller. Some of those should include:


  • What year is the pickup?
  • Whether it’s new or used, does this pickup truck come with a warranty?
  • How many owners has the pickup truck had and what type of use did it receive (i.e. commercial, work, personal)?
  • Does it have 4 Wheel Drive, All Wheel Drive, Rear Wheel Drive or Front Wheel Drive?
  • Has it been involved in any accidents? If so, what repairs have been made and have there been additional inspections?
  • If it’s a used vehicle, are there service records available?
  • If it’s a new vehicle, are there any rebates, special APR or incentives available with this pickup?
  • Are there any special features it has and am I paying extra for them?
  • Can I take it to a mechanic to be inspected if it’s a used truck?
  • Does it have a clean title or is it a salvage title? If it is a salvage title, has it been inspected by state police to ensure it is safe to be sold?
  • What kind of interest rate can I get if I finance through the dealership?
  • Do you markup your financing?
  • What kind of mpg does the truck get?
  • Are there additional fees involved with purchasing the truck?
  • Do you offer extended warranties?
